JAPANESE
CITY POP

Let’s dive into the lush, shimmering sounds of Japanese City Pop, a genre that emerged in the late '70s and flourished throughout the '80s. City Pop is difficult to define, as it blends influences from Soft Rock, Funk, Boogie, Disco, Jazz-Fusion, and even Tropical/Caribbean rhythms, creating a sophisticated and highly polished sound.

It’s commonly said that the City Pop genre was born through the works of Haruomi Hosono & Tatsuro Yamashita, and correlated with the tech boom in the country (Walkman, FM stereo amps, cassette, etc...) that led to the creation of new electronic instruments

FRENCH
BOOGIE

French Boogie was a very prolific musical period in France, but one that received very little media coverage because often considered by many to be old-fashioned and kitschy.

Rooted in Black Music (Commodores, Rick James, Sugarhill Gang...), French Boogie was born of two different schools: the one of Micky Milan (more focused on melody and acoustic funk/disco) and the one of Phill Barney (focused on synth funk with drum machines and rap).

NIGERIAN
GROOVE

Let's take a trip to Nigeria and explore its grooves from the '70s and '80s. Heavily influenced by both traditional African music and Western funk and soul, this era saw legendary artists push boundaries with psychedelic synths, heavy percussion, and deep grooves that still resonate today.

Much like the underground scenes elsewhere, these sounds remained niche for years but gained international recognition through crate-digging DJs and reissues. Nigerian Rare Groove stands as a testament to the country's musical innovation, blending infectious dancefloor energy with deep, thought-provoking artistry.

JAZZ-FUNK, SOUL & TROPIC

To wrap up this musical journey, here’s a playlist that brings together some of our most preferred rare-groove records from around the world. Rooted in Northern Soul, Caribbean, and Latin influences, this playlist is a true collector’s dream, as many of these tracks are nearly impossible to find.

An invitation to an unforgettable sonic voyage—one you definitely don’t want to miss.
